Keys to a successful spring food plot

Spring Food Plots on your Mid West Hunting Property
As spring is growing near so are my thoughts regarding my spring food plots. The key factor to successful food plots is to make sure your PH level in your soil is 6.7 or better. Its very simple to do a soil sample, you can perform a hi tech grid soil test but its really simple to just grab a small shovel and grab a small hand full of soil from different locations with in your food plot. Take these samples to your local co-op for testing. Normally it will cost $10-$15 dollars and take 2 weeks to get back. Once you have it back you can discuss with the local co-op of what nutrients you need for your food plot. You will need to make a plan and know what types of food plots your going to put in. Different types of plants require different types of nutrients. When thinking about spring plots be thinking about annuals which is a plant that life cycle only lasts that growing season. Fall plots is the best time to plant your perennials such as clover, alfalfa, turnips and so on.
What are my favorite spring plots
Of course soy beans always top the list as the tonnage and food value is high. Corn is a good one except seed corn is extremely expensive. One of my new favorites is a mixture of buck wheat, soy beans and iron-clay peas. This mix is excellent for deer and turkey. Its extremely easy to grow and the deer will absolutely come for miles to eat it. If you haven't tried this mix please do yourself a favor and give it a try this year you will be sold on it. The problem with this mix is the first sign of frost and your plants will die. There will still be peas and beans but your leafy tonnage will be gone. I like to broadcast turnips and or clover in the plot during august, as the plants mature and old fall sets in the turnips and clover will sprout and this will create a good fall and  winter plot for you. Always be thinking about what you can do to keep a constant food source in front of your deer herd and you will be able to keep those big bucks on your farm.
